What Is a Detuned Harmonic Filter Panel ?

A Detuned Harmonic Filter Panel is an advanced type of Automatic Power Factor Correction (APFC) panel that incorporates series reactors (chokes) in combination with capacitor banks. The addition of reactors prevents resonance with the power system and suppresses harmonic amplification.



How does It Work :

  1. Power Factor Correction: Like a standard APFC panel, it improves power factor by injecting reactive power using capacitor banks.

  2. Harmonic Mitigation: Reactors (usually 6% or 7% detuned) are connected in series with capacitors to detune the circuit from the dominant harmonic frequency (usually the 5th).

  3. Avoids Resonance: By tuning the LC circuit to a frequency below the 5th harmonic (typically around 189210 Hz for 50 Hz systems), it prevents harmonic resonance and protects both the capacitors and the overall network.
